Egg Freezing
Dr. Suleiman Ghoneim, a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology, states that egg freezing is a method for preserving women's potential for future childbearing by maintaining fertility. He notes that this procedure initially emerged from medical necessities, particularly for women suffering from genetic diseases affecting fertility, or those requiring chemotherapy, radiation, or surgical treatments that could impact fertility later on.
According to Dr. Ghoneim, many Jordanian women who have been diagnosed with cancer and undergone chemotherapy or radiation treatments have lost their ability to conceive due to the lack of prior measures to preserve their fertility. These treatments can impair ovarian function, sometimes causing it to cease egg production or reducing the quality of the eggs produced.
However, some women now undergo the procedure for social reasons. "A woman might not find a suitable partner, want to focus on her career, or may not be ready to become a mother," says Dr. Ghoneim. He adds that in such cases, women opt for egg freezing because time is a critical factor in fertility. He points out that the efficiency of egg production generally declines after the mid-thirties, reducing the likelihood of pregnancy.
